Suzy Shutt: Supporting the Mother, Not Just the Baby

For physiotherapist Suzy Shutt, the moment her life’s work came into focus was not in a clinic, but in her own recovery from childbirth. “I experienced an emergency C section, and my rehabilitation following what is classed as major abdominal surgery was minimal,” she reflects. As a physiotherapist, she could guide her own recovery. But she was keenly aware that for many women, this was not the case. The standard six-week check-up felt incomplete, a missed opportunity. It was this personal experience, combined with her professional observations, that planted the seed for The M Word Physio.

Working in a first-contact role within GP surgeries across South Norfolk, Suzy saw a pattern. Women were struggling with pain, fatigue and pelvic health symptoms that significantly affected their quality of life, often while waiting months for specialist care. Many had been told their symptoms were just a normal part of motherhood or ageing, leaving them feeling unheard and unsupported. “I have always felt that prevention is better than cure,” Suzy says, “so seeing women early would be priority to reduce the risk of symptoms progressing or becoming chronic.”
“I experienced an emergency C section, and my rehabilitation following what is classed as major abdominal surgery was minimal,”
She launched The M Word Physio to be a different kind of space: calm, evidence-informed, and, most importantly, a place where women are given time. The initial challenge was one of education. Many people simply didn’t know that physiotherapy could help manage the physical impacts of hormonal change, from post-natal recovery to menopause. Overcoming the prevailing narrative that women should just accept their symptoms required persistence, but slowly, word began to spread.
Today, The M Word Physio provides specialist post-natal physiotherapy, combining hands-on treatment with education and empowerment. Suzy’s approach is holistic, creating personalised plans that consider a woman’s physical health alongside her emotional wellbeing, social support and personal goals. Partnerships with brands like John Lewis have helped make this vital education more accessible, reaching women before the whirlwind of new parenthood begins.
Suzy’s work, which includes lecturing in Women’s Health Physiotherapy at the University of East Anglia, is built on a simple, powerful belief. “Looking after your baby is important but also so is looking after yourself,” she explains. It’s a message she lives by, carving out time for her own wellbeing through art and mindful exercise to balance the demands of running a business and raising two children.
Her vision is not just to build a business, but to change the conversation around women’s health, breaking down the stigma that so often surrounds a mother’s recovery. By creating a space where women feel seen, heard and supported, Suzy Shutt is quietly reminding us that caring for a new family must begin with caring for the mother.
