Earth Sole began not with a business plan, but with a rainy day at a festival in South Africa. It was December 2020, and Anouk was living in a caravan, spending most of her time barefoot and connected to nature. At a festival when the rain came down, a friend showed her some leather offcuts. In that moment, an idea sparked!
Not long before that day, Anouk had watched The Earthing Movie, a documentary that inspired her about grounding - staying connected to the Earth. Now, as Anouk was about to move back to the city of Cape Town, she wanted to find a way to stay connected to the Earth. Right there and then at the festival, a simple shoe design with a leather base felt like the answer.
From Grounding to Shoemaking The shoes she made that day were for herself. But when friends and strangers shown their love for the shoes in the year following, Anouk realised she had created something others were looking for too. With no experience in business or shoemaking, she decided to just give it a go. She measured hundreds of feet, trying to understand the endless variations of the human foot. For some early sizes, she created sometimes as many as fifty different versions for one shoe size, minutely adjusting the shape until it felt right.

The Art of a Second Skin Perfecting the fit became a lesson in patience. Just when a size seemed perfect, feedback would arrive that the shoes were too loose or too tight. “Was it the leather?” she wondered. “Was it because every pair is handmade? Or was it simply the unique shape of each customer’s feet?” Whatever the cause, the team solved it, again and again.
That dedication is what gives the shoes their signature feel. Anouk describes how a perfectly fitted pair should feel less like footwear and more like an extension of the body. “It really is like a hug,” she explains. “The soft suede gives you just that extra protection and comfort, whilst you still feel the freedom of being barefoot.”
A Business Built on Care From the beginning, Earth Sole has been a story of connection. Anouk found local upholstery companies with leather offcuts, giving the material a second life. More importantly, she built a team rooted in community. Like Natasha, who has a form of autism and had never had a regular job, joined at the very start. “Seeing how fulfilling this work is for her brings me a lot of joy,” Anouk says.
And the team’s stitchers work from their own homes, finding the repetitive, tactile process of hand-stitching meditative. It’s a business model built not on speed, but on human wellbeing and hearts.
Today, Anouk takes quiet pride in what Earth Sole has become: a brand that offers comfort, connection, and a chance for people to feel more grounded in their lives. Her dream is simple – for every person who loves nature to have a pair, not as a luxury, but because they deserve to feel that connection.
